What are your vision correction options in Manhattan? NY LASIK offers LASIK, including topography-guided Contoura Vision, PRK and SMILE, along with lens-based options such as EVO ICL and refractive lens exchange. Laser procedures reshape the cornea; lens procedures change the eye’s focusing power with an implant. Your eye examination determines which options are appropriate.

One Manhattan consultation.
A clearer understanding of your options.

From reading a subway sign to working at a screen, your vision has to meet different demands throughout the day. Refractive surgery aims to reduce dependence on glasses or contacts by improving how light focuses inside the eye.

The right starting point is a thorough evaluation. At NY LASIK’s Midtown East office, your prescription, corneal shape and thickness, eye health and daily activities help guide the conversation. Glasses and contact lenses remain valid options, too.

The differences at a glance

Compare laser vision correction in Manhattan

LASIK, PRK and SMILE work differently. Contoura is a customized LASIK approach.

How laser procedures differ, including early recovery considerations
Option How it works What to discuss Early recovery
All-laser LASIK A laser creates a thin corneal flap; an excimer laser reshapes the tissue beneath it. Prescription range, corneal thickness and shape, tear-film health and flap considerations. Often a relatively quick visual recovery; vision can fluctuate as the eyes heal.
Contoura Vision Topography-guided LASIK uses a map of the corneal surface to plan treatment. Whether your measurements support this approach for nearsightedness with or without astigmatism. Follows a LASIK recovery pathway, with individualized follow-up.
PRK The surface cell layer is removed before the laser reshapes the cornea; no LASIK flap is made. Whether surface treatment fits your corneas and activities. More initial discomfort and slower early visual recovery while the surface heals.
SMILE A laser forms a small piece of tissue inside the cornea, removed through a small opening. Eligibility for treatment of nearsightedness with or without astigmatism. Flapless healing; clarity and comfort improve on an individual timeline.

This comparison supports a conversation with your surgeon. It cannot establish eligibility or predict your result.

Understand each approach

Types of laser eye surgery

01

All-laser LASIK

LASIK changes the shape of the cornea beneath a thin flap. With an all-laser approach, a femtosecond laser creates the flap and an excimer laser performs the reshaping. Eligible prescriptions may include nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism, depending on the treatment system.

Corneal measurements and eye health matter as much as your glasses prescription. Your surgeon also considers dry eye symptoms and how a corneal flap fits your activities.

02

Contoura Vision: topography-guided LASIK

Contoura uses measurements of the corneal surface to help customize a LASIK treatment. It is a type of LASIK, with the same need to assess corneal strength, tear-film health and overall suitability.

For eligible patients with nearsightedness, with or without astigmatism, the consultation includes reviewing whether this planning approach fits their eyes. More detailed mapping does not make every eye a candidate.

03

PRK: surface laser treatment

Photorefractive keratectomy, or PRK, reshapes the cornea after the outermost cell layer is removed. That layer grows back during healing, usually protected initially by a bandage contact lens.

PRK may be considered when avoiding a LASIK flap is useful. Early recovery is generally slower than LASIK, and discomfort can be greater during surface healing. A thin or abnormal cornea does not automatically qualify for PRK.

04

SMILE: small-incision laser correction

SMILE uses a femtosecond laser to create a small piece of corneal tissue called a lenticule. Removing it through a small opening changes the cornea’s focusing power without creating a LASIK-style flap.

SMILE treats eligible nearsightedness, with or without astigmatism. U.S. patient labeling includes adults age 22 or older with a stable prescription. Corneal and eye-health testing are still required.

Lens-based alternatives to laser correction

Refractive surgery also includes procedures that use a lens implant. EVO ICL and refractive lens exchange are not corneal laser treatments, and they have different eligibility requirements and risks.

An added lens

EVO ICL

EVO ICL places an implantable lens inside the eye while leaving the natural lens in place. It may be considered for eligible nearsighted patients, including some who are not candidates for corneal laser surgery. Eye anatomy and other measurements determine suitability.

A replacement lens

Refractive lens exchange

Refractive lens exchange, or RLE, replaces the natural lens with an artificial intraocular lens. It may enter the conversation when age-related changes in reading vision or other factors make a lens-based approach relevant. Lens choice affects distance, intermediate and near vision.

Learn about refractive lens exchange →

Lens procedures involve surgery inside the eye. Discuss risks such as infection, pressure changes, retinal complications and visual disturbances, along with possible continued use of glasses.

Start with your eyes

Am I a candidate for Manhattan LASIK?

Candidacy depends on a complete examination. Your team will review:

  • Age and prescription stability. LASIK is generally considered for adults with a stable prescription; age requirements vary by procedure.
  • Corneal shape and thickness. Scans help identify conditions that could make laser treatment unsuitable.
  • Tear-film and eye health. Dry eye and other conditions may need treatment or change the recommendation.
  • Medical history and goals. Medications, pregnancy or breastfeeding, previous eye surgery and your visual priorities all matter.

A plan based on your measurements

Bring your questions about screen work, nighttime driving, exercise and reading. Discuss the expected benefits, limitations and alternatives before deciding on surgery.

From evaluation to follow-up

What to expect from your consultation

  1. Measure and evaluate

The team assesses your prescription, corneas and eye health. Ask how long to stop wearing contact lenses before testing so measurements can be reliable.

  2. Compare appropriate options

Review the procedures that fit your examination, including likely benefits, limitations, risks, healing expectations and costs. Take time to ask questions.

  3. Plan recovery around your routine

Arrange an escort home after surgery and time for follow-up visits. Your surgeon will explain drops, eye protection and when to return to work, driving and exercise.

Benefits and risks belong in the same conversation

Vision correction may reduce dependence on glasses or contacts, but it does not guarantee perfect vision. Laser surgery can cause dry eye, glare, halos, fluctuating vision, undercorrection or overcorrection. Serious complications, including infection, corneal weakening or permanent vision loss, can occur. Your surgeon should explain the risks specific to your eyes and the proposed procedure.

Manhattan LASIK FAQ

Your vision correction questions, answered

What is the difference between LASIK and refractive surgery?

Refractive surgery is the broader category of procedures that change how the eye focuses light. LASIK is one laser procedure within that category. PRK and SMILE also treat the cornea, while EVO ICL and refractive lens exchange use an implanted lens.

Which laser vision correction procedure is best for me?

The best fit depends on your prescription, corneal measurements, tear film, age and visual goals. LASIK, PRK and SMILE have different eligibility requirements and healing patterns. A comprehensive examination is needed before a surgeon can recommend a procedure.

Is Contoura a different procedure from LASIK?

Contoura Vision is a topography-guided form of LASIK. It uses detailed measurements of the corneal surface to help customize the laser treatment. It still involves a corneal flap and the same need for careful LASIK screening.

Can laser vision correction treat astigmatism?

Eligible patients with astigmatism may qualify for laser vision correction. The type and amount of astigmatism, corneal shape and other measurements determine which options are appropriate. An irregular cornea needs careful evaluation before any recommendation.

Can I have LASIK if I have dry eyes or thin corneas?

Dry eye and thin or abnormal corneas can affect eligibility. Dry eye may need treatment before measurements or surgery. Some patients may be considered for PRK or a lens-based option, but neither is automatically suitable when LASIK is ruled out.

How soon can I work or travel around Manhattan after surgery?

Recovery varies by procedure and by person. PRK generally has a slower early recovery than LASIK. Arrange an escort home on surgery day, allow time for follow-up visits and wait for your surgeon’s clearance before driving. Ask for a return-to-work plan that fits your job.

Will I still need reading glasses after LASIK?

You may. LASIK does not stop the natural lens from losing its ability to focus up close with age. Some people consider monovision or lens-based procedures, each with tradeoffs. Discuss reading, screen and distance vision at your consultation.

How much does Manhattan LASIK cost?

Your quote depends on the recommended procedure and treatment plan. Ask what is included for testing, surgery, postoperative visits and any enhancement policy. NY LASIK offers a consultation to discuss your options and provides information about available financing.
